I’ve Been In An Accident, What Do I Do?

You have just been in an accident, what do you do? In the event of an auto accident, the first thing you should do is notify the police immediately to respond to the scene and document the incident. It is important to not discuss the details of the accident with other parties involved. This includes any assumptions or allegations of fault. Only speak to the police officers on the scene regarding the circumstances of the accident.

Taking photos of the accident scene can be extremely helpful, however it is not imperative if it puts you or anyone else involved in danger. If possible, collect names and contact information of witnesses who saw the accident.

We are here for you! Contact us as soon you become aware of a claim, have opened a claim, or need to open a new claim. Our auto insurance claim management team are ready to help you through the entire process. Once we have been contacted, our team will notify the insurance company and will coordinate the timely settlement of your claim.

Common Types of Car Accidents

Rear-End Collision

A rear-end collision is when a vehicle is hit from another vehicle from behind. This applies whether it involves a truck, car, or motorcycle. In some cases, rear-end collisions involve more than two vehicles. This multi-car accident is common on highways or freeways.

According to the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) nearly 2.5 million rear-end collisions are reported in the United States every year. That's 28% of all traffic-related accidents, making this type of collision the most common.

Head-On Collision

A head-on collision happens when two vehicles traveling opposite directions collide. If impact damage to the front of vehicle is seen, then it is likely that there was a head-on collision. These types of accidents happen when a driver crosses the center line into the path of opposing traffic.

Common Head-On Collision Injuries

  • Abdominal injuries
  • Pelvic fractures
  • Head trauma, concussions, or brain injuries
  • Whiplash, neck pain, and back pain
  • Foot, ankle, and lower extremity injuries or fractures
  • Chest and rib fractures
  • Spinal cord injuries and paralysis

Side-Impact Collision

A side-impact collision, also know as "T-Bone", is when a vehicle impacts the side of another vehicle. Typically, T-Bone accidents occur in an intersection. However, this type of collision can happen when a vehicle crosses a street or pulls out of a driveway. If the cars impact perpendicular to each other, it is considered a side-impact collision.

Common T-Bone Collision Injuries

  • Abdominal injuries
  • Pelvic fractures
  • Head trauma, concussions, or brain injuries
  • Whiplash, neck pain, and back pain
  • Foot, ankle, and lower extremity injuries or fractures
  • Chest and rib fractures
  • Spinal cord injuries and paralysis

Sideswipe Collision

Sideswipe accidents happen when two or more vehicles are traveling parallel to one another, and one vehicle strikes the side of the other vehicle. Oftentimes, these types of accidents happen when drivers fail to turn their heads to check their blind spots before merging lanes, or changing lanes frequently. Sideswipe accidents are dangerous as the initial impact can cause one or both vehicles to lose control and careen off the road into other lanes of traffic.

Multi-Vehicle Collision

Multi-vehicle collisions involve three or more vehicles. This type of accident is often the result of a chain-reaction from a rear-end collision. Determining the fault for multi-vehicle collisions can be challenging. More than one driver may be partly at fault and insurance companies often try to shift the blame.

Single-Vehicle Collision

Single-vehicle collisions are surprisingly common. These accidents generally result from a driver striking something in their path, such as an animal, dropped cargo, or debris in the road from another vehicle. Naturally, drivers will try to avoid these road hazards which can cause the vehicle to veer off the roadway, where it may collide with another object.
